  • Video game giant Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, has bought Bandcamp. Bandcamp CEO and cofounder Ethan Diamond broke the news earlier today, March 2nd, in a statement on Bandcamp's blog. "Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team," he wrote. "The products and services you depend on aren't going anywhere." He added: "However, behind the scenes we're working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services." Diamond added that Bandcamp, which was founded in 2008, has rejected offers from other companies in the past, but Epic ticked all the right boxes. "We share a vision of building the most open, artist-friendly ecosystem in the world," he wrote, "and together we'll be able to create even more opportunities for artists to be compensated fairly for their work." Epic Games has also posted about the deal. Read its post here and Bandcamp's here. One of Bandcamp's most popular schemes, Bandcamp Friday, has recently come under fire from some corners of the electronic music scene. Find out why.
