  • DJ and critic madison moore has curated programming centering queer dance floors as part of a residency for New York arts space The Kitchen. From January 18th until March 6th, conversations, screenings and DJ sets by Shaun J. Wright, Nita Aviance, Juana and TYGAPAW will "explore nightlife and queer of color world-making as sites of speculative reimagining," moore told Resident Advisor. These in-person events take place against the backdrop of artist Sadie Barnette's physical installation The New Eagle Creek Saloon, an interpretation of San Francisco's first Black-owned gay bar that Barnette's father operated in the early '90s. Each DJ set is six hours long, an opportunity to use "Sadie's considerations of queer nightlife, gentrification, and questions of the frequencies of queerness as prompts to stage meaningful experiences for audiences," described moore, an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Twirl Records cofounder Shaun J. Wright played on January 22nd and will be followed by Nita Aviance on February 5th, Juana on February 19th and TYGAPAW on March 5th. moore, who is currently writing a book called Dance Mania: A Manifesto For Queer Nightlife, hopes audiences will feel "a sense of the urgency, emergency and necessity" of Black queer nightlife spaces. "Capitalism works tirelessly, even relentlessly, to control our sense of time, pleasure and fun," moore said. "So my hope is that this project, which is so focused on feeling, sensation, lingering and community, reminds people to feel."
