British photographer Georgina Cook has compiled a playlist from her "dubstep years," mirroring the journey of her new photo book.
Following a successful Kickstarter campaign last August, Cook recently released her first book, Drumz Of The South: The Dubstep Years (2004-2007). Born from her blog of the same name, the book compiles photos from seminal dubstep nights in London, when the genre was still in its formative years.
"The book is a reflection of the time, the era and also my personal journey," Cook told Resident Advisor. "I started with all the pictures in a chronological order then played with it a bit to create a rhythm. It's a mixture of dance floors and portraits, alongside pictures of the environment in South London."
As well as well-known images, Drumz Of The South contains a number of rarely seen and unpublished photos. "I included some pictures which are technically not so good but they tell an important part of the story," she continued, "so I had to forego a little bit of pride with those."
The playlist below tells the same story through music. "It begins with the first dubstep track I ever heard, Mala's 'B,' then it echoes my journey with the music, through some favourites from Hatcha's Dubstep Allstars compilation and stuff I heard at FWD>>," she said. "Like the book, the playlist ends with Burial."
