Philou Louzolo's debut album, African Gold, will arrive next May.
Released by his Wokoundou label, the record spans a range of modern African dance genres and includes 18 collaborators, all of whom are from Africa or the diaspora. There are slots for MoMA Ready, Floyd Lavine, DJ Kwamzy, Kususa and Femi Jaye.
Louzolo told Resident Advisor that he "started this album while touring worldwide shortly after I became a father in 2019. Some tunes were produced during brighter days in good health with stability and success, some in a darker period in rehab when I was struggling with addiction after I lost my house during Covid-19. But I've finished the album recently when I was finally getting my life back: being a father, doing shows, rebuilding my career / label and overcoming the challenges I've faced."
He continued: "At the same time, I managed to create this project with the financial help of Dutch Sena music production fund and different artists from the Afro diaspora worldwide, sending each other stems and vocals by mail. It's an empowering but challenging process to write, produce and mix 20 songs without a permanent residence or a studio to work with. African Gold is about our rich African heritage that lives in our individual strength as creatives from African descent and my wish to unite us more, sharing a loving message of strength, courage and hope."
Out in May 2022, African Gold will be preceded by four singles. The first, "Melanin," lands on December 20th.
