  • A decentralized autonomous organization called MODA DAO seeks to adopt Web3 technology in the music industry. Designed with a new, Web3-driven approach to publishing music in mind, MODA "aims to remove the middlemen of traditional streaming services," according to the group itself. The idea is to give artists full control over their catalogues with a framework they call "Music3." MODA DAO's treasury will be used to create tools for artists to release their music, as well as providing grants for artist projects. The group are also working on an "audio NFT aggregator" that will take the place of ordinary mp3 downloads. The platform will allow artists to upload their music as NFTs and allow users to listen to the NFTs without having to transfer ownership. MODA DAO has raised around $5 million so far, with Richie Hawtin and deadmau5 joining during the most recent round of funding. Resident Advisor spoke with Hawtin over email about the venture.
What do you think MODA brings to the table in terms of music publishing and music releasing that is different than the traditional system? MODA DAO is a blockchain powered global music community helping to accelerate the adoption of Web3 technology by the music industry, which we believe will have a positive affect for sonic creatives. Using on-chain audio fingerprinting, rights management and distribution, we are bringing trust and transparency into the music ecosystem which will create a stronger and fairer economic ecosystem for the music industry. MODA DAO will combine alternative licensing and monetisation opportunities through the use of NFTs, Metaverse integration and other Web3 technologies. I'm excited that the tools MODA is building will help create further options for the independent music industry to take more real-time control of their digital economics, compensating artists fairly and connecting them fluidly to their supporters creating long lasting personal connections to their fans. How did you first discover DAOs, and what made you want to join MODA? I actually started building a music focused DAO in March shortly after the initial NFT explosion and the launch of my Discord channel. It was originally focused on the idea of exploring how a future electronic label could benefit from a DAO structure and how it might strengthen the bonds between like-minded creators. During those brainstorming sessions and digging into the online community further I found that there were others interested in similar ideas and it felt like it was better to come together on a wider music platform to really aggregate all of our connections in the industry. Can you tell us more about how the grant system will work? The MODA grant system is open to artists, producers and entrepreneurs who plan to experiment with community-driven creative projects which blur the lines between artists, audiences and fans. It is within these conversations and collaborations which we believe a completely new, exciting music ecosystem can be created. Through the MODA token and with our combined music connections we will be able to directly fund and offer support for these new Web3 music initiatives. We are all committed to helping actual creatives and makers utilise the tech and promise of Web3 to develop a more level playing field to the music business and a fairer and more harmonious distribution of wealth and opportunity. How will MODA interface with platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, and what does it offer that's different than using a regular distributor? MODA isn't designed to interface with or replace traditional music streaming platforms. Instead, it will enable users to stream NFT audio files from every leading NFT platform and chain with a simple layer of usability. This brings a new and unified listening experience to users currently facing fragmented music collections. In addition to enabling users to listen to NFT files without requiring ownership transfers across multiple platforms, the aggregator will include a social feature allowing musicians and creatives to upload their music directly into the app for direct streaming to other users.
