  • Cape Town artist Angel-Ho opens up about mental health in a new short film about their life. Spanning nine minutes, Angel-Ho: The Documentary is out now and free to stream on YouTube. Directed by Johannesburg-based filmmaker Allison Swank, the work addresses Angel-Ho's schizophrenia and its impact on their art and trans identity. It features narration by the producer, who also scored the mini-doc, as well as their mother. According to Swank, this is the first time the Hyperdub affiliate has publicly shared the story of their schizophrenia and how it relates to their gender transition. "I shared my darkest moment with the world to shed some light on the truth," the experimental pop artist told RA. "The truth in answer is that you can overcome the darkest of days of your life. No one or nothing can take away your power so its up to you to make those changes with a positive attitude and gratitude towards your higher self. No one said it would be easy but this is the life of a superstar climbing out a grave and instead buries her insecurities fears and lows. This is my journey." The film follows A Time To Die, Angel-Ho's third LP that came out via NAAFI early this month. In addition to their solo career, the rapper and performance artist also co-runs NON, a label and collective focused on Pan-African artists, alongside Chino Amobi and Nkisi.
