  • Arca will perform at an exhibition at Halle am Berghain. Scheduled for a yet-to-be-confirmed date in September, the performance will take place within Berl-Berl, an installation by Jakob Kudsk Steensen that depicts Berlin's ancient origins as swamps and wetlands. Commissioned by Light Art Space, Berl-Berl has been showing at Halle am Berghain since July 10th, and will continue up until September 26th. "Berl," an old Slavic word that translates literally as swamp, is believed to be the origin of Berlin's name. Berl-Berl's soundtrack was made by sound composer Matt McCorkle and spatial sound designer Lugh O'Neil, with Arca contributing vocals. Her vocals combine with an array of field recordings, from amphibious croaks and bird calls to rustling trees, which were then treated with post-production effects to create an organic sonic world. Layering and generative audio techniques mean the soundtrack is never the same twice. Watch a video about how the installation was conceptualised and created here.
Sometimes referred to as the "unused" part of Berghain, Halle am Berghain has been transformed into an exhibition space during the Covid-19 pandemic, previously running sound installations and ice skating events. It also hosted Ostgut Ton's 16th anniversary stream. For more on Berl-Berl and to sign up for information on Arca's performance, head over to the Light Art Space website. Photo credit: Timo Ohler
