  • Paul Johnson has died at age 50. The devastating news comes after a weeks-long battle with Covid-19. Johnson's Facebook fan page posted news of his death. 5 Magazine stated that Johnson's aunt asked the publication to inform readers of Johnson's death.
Johnson specialized in a melodic, sample-heavy style of Chicago house that highlighted a clear connection between disco, soul and his signature dance floor style. His Bohannon-sampling 1999 track "Get Get Down" topped Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play and charted in 14 countries, but he leaves a 30-year discography full of timeless albums, e.g. his Peacefrog Records debut Bump Talkin, and EPs for labels like Dance Mania, Djax-Up-Beats, Cajual, Relief, Underground Construction and Crydamoure, to name just a few. The Chicago native, born 1971, was wheelchair-bound since 1987, after being injured in a shooting accident. He was a double amputee since 2010, yet continued to DJ around the world to legions of fans. In Daft Punk's "Teachers," the 1997 track in which the French duo cited a list of influences, Paul Johnson is the first artist named. The dance music community mourned Johnson's passing.
