The New York Mayor's Office has released its inaugural Office of Nightlife report.
The report's final portion focuses on the office's future, with several recommendations for business development and recovery, quality of life improvement, harm reduction and the preservation of nightlife culture. Suggestions include Sunday waste removal services to address litter from Saturday night events, the establishment of a museum to archive New York's nightlife history and the advancement of mental health awareness via a "Thrive at Night" program.
The report, spanning a variety of the office's events and milestones that occurred from 2018 to 2021, comprises 162 pages organized into three parts. The first section kicks off with notes on the Office of Nightlife's early research process and data collection, following its creation in 2017, while the second part of the document details the ways in which these early findings were put into action. Plans such as the MEND NYC program—which promoted mediation between venues and neighbors—are mentioned, along with educational campaigns on harm reduction. It also addresses the office's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment Anne del Castillo says, "We're proud to present the first-ever report by our Office of Nightlife. This report tells the story of how our team created this new office and its groundbreaking work, before and during the pandemic crisis, to preserve a critical piece of the city's identity."
The Mayor's Office of Nightlife was formed in September 2017 and has since operated as a liaison for the nightlife industry and the city government.
