  • Omar McCutcheon, AKA Batu, is opening a studio for the Bristol music community today, May 20th. Motivated by his own experiences of barriers to entry in the UK music scene, McCutcheon aims to help equalise the industry and empower artists of all backgrounds. Located at Trinity Centre, First Light Studio will offer mentorship and access to music production and DJ equipment to those over 16 years of age. "Privately renting a studio is an expense that is prohibitive for a lot of up-and-coming artists," writes McCutcheon, "and there should be more access for free. I'm really proud to bring First Light Studio to life with the support of Dr. Martens, and help give Bristol's talented network of up-and-coming artists the support they need." Hodge, Elder Island, Mix Nights (AKA Danielle and Daisy Moon) and Sir Hiss will host workshops this July, ranging from one-on-one feedback sessions to DJ workshops. McCutcheon is known for his label, Timedance, and his releases on XL, Hessle Audio and Livity Sound.
