  • Flying Lotus has composed music for a forthcoming Netflix anime series, Yasuke. Yesterday, Netflix released teaser images of the show, which is based on the real-world story of the first African samurai warrior. The show was created by LeSean Thomas (Black Dynamite, The Boondocks) and animated by MAPPA, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen. The main character is voiced by Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Get Out). FlyLo, real name Steven Ellison, handled original music for the series. "There is a serendipitous nature about this project, how an African-American man goes to Japan to live and work amongst the very best in Japanese anime to create an anime about an African who goes to Japan to live amongst the Japanese elite and become a warrior. Part of me deep down feels I was meant to create this adventure series with MAPPA, Flying Lotus, LaKeith and the rest of this talented team," said Thomas. Flying Lotus announced the news and shared images from Yasuke on Twitter.
Flying Lotus is nominated for a Grammy Award for his production on Thundercat's It Is What It Is. Netflix will releaseYasuke on April 29th, 2021.
