  • SXSW Film Festival is hosting the world premiere of a new documentary about avant-garde composer William Basinski. Disintegration Loops, directed by David Wexler, focuses on Basinski's seminal ambient recordings of the same name. The film will air at SXSW, happening online this year, on March 16th at 11 AM local time. A series of four albums that Basinski released during the early 2000s, The Disintegration Loops were made from deteriorating tape loops. It's considered Basinksi's elegy to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US. In the documentary, made during the pandemic last year, the American artist weighs the legacy of his sound pieces ahead of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Basinski's recent work includes the 2020 LP Lamentations, which he created from 40 years worth of personal sound archives, and a collaborative album with Preston Wendel. Read a single review from that joint project. For more on the composer, revisit our 2018 RA Exchange podcast with William Basinski.
