  • Sacred Bones Records will release a string of rare and unheard material from Alan Vega. Vega, one-half of the massively influential minimal synth/protopunk band Suicide, passed away in 2016 aged 78. Throughout his storied career, he made several recordings that never saw the light of day. These will now be available to the public for the first time thanks to an archival project led by Vega's wife Liz Lamere, collaborator Jared Artaud, creative director Michael Handis and the Brooklyn-based label Sacred Bones. First up is Mutator, an eight-track LP out in April. Discovered in Vega's vaults in 2019, it was recorded in New York with Lamere from 1995 to 1996 and highly influenced by hip-hop and the rapid pace of urban development. “The moment Liz and I discovered the original ADAT tapes of Mutator, we knew we had found something special and felt strongly that it needed to be shared out in the world," said Artaud. The unheard album precedes more rare and unreleased music from Vega on Sacred Bones. The prolific artist had a habit of immediately moving onto the next project and rarely looking back at his previous work, Lamere explained in a statement, adding that Vega's primary purpose for going into the studio was to experiment with sound, not to make records.
