  • Jacques Greene is selling the publishing rights to his new track, "Promise," in an online auction closing at 6 PM EST today. The bidding is taking place on digital arts marketplace Foundation, where users pay for works using the blockchain currency Ethereum. Though a mere six-second snippet of the track was uploaded to the site, the highest bid for the copyright at the time of writing rests at 7ETH, or $13,194.72. "As we explore the possibilities of art on the chain and the promise of web3, we can maybe begin to let go of old systems," Greene said. "This NFT represents the AV clip—but also the publishing rights to the eventual song release… I got out of a long, pretty bad publishing deal with a big company last year—a big personal and professional victory! Didn't feel they brought much value to my work." He continues, "I'm excited (and scared) of what possibilities and promises lie in this field and for the arts and culture in general. I have a lot of hopes and fears tied to it. [Would] much rather think and talk about what might happen than sitting around feeling dread. The platform is a promise. You can buy the copyright here. In purchasing, you will own the publishing of the song, but I reserve the right to approval. That's the promise." Last week, label LuckyMe (of which Jacques Greene is an affiliate) uploaded the artwork for its first-ever release Hudson Mohawke Says Oops!, onto the website. Within 24 hours, that piece sold for 0.6899 ETH, or $1,225.12.
