  • Chick Corea has died at age 79. The legendary American jazz pianist was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that he succumbed to on February 9th, according to a post on Corea's official Facebook page today. His death brings a close to a 60-year career saw him work closely with the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Stanley Clarke, winning 23 Grammy Awards along the way. Corea was a key player in the development of jazz fusion, playing electric piano with Davis on records like Bitches Brew in the late '60s and going on to incorporate synthesisers like the Minimoog throughout the '70s. He also led the influential band Return To Forever, and was a regular on lauded German jazz label ECM. The Facebook post shares a message from Corea which says, "I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun." Artists from the electronic music world have taken to Twitter to express their condolences.
