  • Amman, the capital city of Jordan, has a new label focused on Arab women artists. Established this year, Malakat Records describes itself as the "first womxn focused record label" in the Middle East and North Africa. In addition to releasing music, it aims to host workshops and other support programs for aspiring talents around the region. Its first project is a music production camp for "all musically inclined Arab womxn artists." Following an open call for applications last month, the label will choose participants to learn about songwriting, production and artist development with industry professionals. The final goal is to produce a six-track EP that's scheduled for May, Malakat told Resident Advisor. The sound of the EP will ultimately depend on the applicants, according to the team. "On a broader level, we are currently looking into hyperpop and trying to apply its maximalist hyperrealism to Arabic pop to hopefully spawn a new microgenre," they said. "Malakat" refers to an Arabic word for innate ability. Watch a video about the label below.
