  • STR4TA, AKA Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul Maunick, are releasing new material this spring. The album, titled Aspects, will land through Peterson's own Brownswood Recordings imprint on March 26th, 2021. The featured nine tracks draw influence from the early '80s Brit-funk scene, which Maunick was heavily involved with as a member of bands like Light Of The World and Freeez. The project marks the first time the longtime friends and collaborators have worked together in over a decade. "The idea of the project was to capture that raw, moment to moment sound," Maunick says. Contrasting the refined style he and his peers have developed over the years, the forthcoming release aims to emulate the spontaneous nature of the live show. "I was there at the back, telling them, no, leave it like that, cut it there, or just use that first take," he says about his role in the recording process. Gilles Peterson is a UK-based radio DJ and label head of Brownswood Recordings. In the '80s, guitarist and composer Jean-Paul Maunick gained recognition as a bandleader of the Britsh acid jazz group Incognito. The band released several records on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label throughout the '90s. Watch the music video for "Rhythm In Your Mind."
