  • Maral's first full-length comes out in October. The 15-track Push will come via Leaving Records. Like her past work, it's a mix of club music, experimental electronics, dub, noise and post-punk, incorporating samples and ideas from Iranian classical and folk music. "The history of Iranian music has a lot of melancholy in it," Maral says. "So much of Iranian history is sad. Since ancient times, Iranians were always fighting off invasions." Much of the LP was improvised, and it features heavy use of the setar—an Iranian stringed instrument important to the region's history and often used by Sufi mystics—as well as Maral's own vocals. There's also a reinterpretation of Rae Sremmurd's "No Type." Guest spots come from dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry and Crass founding member Penny Rimbaud, who Maral first contacted when she released Mahur Club and sent it to him, outlining the large influence Crass has had on her music. Listen to "Sweet Thing" and check out the album at Bandcamp.
