- It's part of Editions Mego's new Portraits GRM series, which also includes records from Lucy Railton and Max Eilbacher.
Editions Mego will launch a new series, Portraits GRM, with records from Jim O'Rourke, Lucy Railton & Max Eilbacher.
Since 2012, Peter Rehberg's label has issued archival works from the pioneering Paris studio, Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), under under its Recollections GRM sub-label. Portraits GRM—a collaboration with the Paris institution—attempts to bring the exploratory ethos of Pierre Schaeffer's sound lab into the future.
The first record in the series comes from Jim O'Rourke. Shutting Down Here covers a period of 30 years, spanning from O'Rourke's first visit to the GRM to the present. The label says the single-track full-length—which features Eiko Ishibashi on piano, Atsuko Hatano on violin and viola and Elvind Lonning on trumpet—covers wide dynamic levels and that listeners should adjust their volume accordingly.
While longer works on Portraits GRM will take up a full record, the series will also feature splits between contemporary musicians. Accordingly, the second record on Portraits GRM is from Lucy Railton and Max Eilbacher. Railton's side, "Forma," is a piece for cello and multichannel tape that was commissioned by Ina GRM and first performed at the organization's Multiphonies Concert Series. Max Eilbacher's side is called "Metabolist Meter (Foster, Cottin, Caetani And A Fly)." It was recorded in Baltimore, Maryland and involves a recording of a dying fly.
Both records are available digitally via the Portraits GRM Bandcamp now, with vinyl out July 1st.
