- Origens Da Luz collects key material from the Outro Tempo star.
Music From Memory will release a double-LP Priscilla Ermel collection, Origens Da Luz, in February.
The 15-track set builds on John Gómez's well-loved Outro Tempo compilations, both of which featured material from Ermel. Her '80s and '90s material corellates to the Fourth World sound in its combination of synthesizers and indigenous Brazilian influences. Born in São Paulo, Ermel was trained in cello and guitar from an early age. She'd go on to pursue anthropology and filmmaking and would spend long periods of time living with indigenous populations in Brazil.
As the Amazon was threatened by forest fires in the '80s, Ermel reflected on the seemingly contradictory notion of rebirth: "Out of the smoke and ashes, I vowed to plant again, to sow again, and to compose," she wrote.
Gómez, who compiled Origens Da Luz, writes, "Priscilla places a notion of rebirth deep within the Brazilian psyche and identifies the vital desire to sing and dance out of moments of desperation as one of the key mysteries of Brazilian culture."
