Bradford venue Fuse Art Space has won a government-funded grant to expand into a larger arts hub.
The money from the Transforming Places Through Heritage Fund will kickstart a £750,000 expansion project, which will see FUSE move to a larger premises in the city centre. Expected to open in 2021, the purpose-built spot will include education and performance spaces (complete with world-class audio equipment), artist studios, offices and a cinema.
"Having hubs for marginal arts practice is essential to building community, culture, education and collective joy, and is more often than not undervalued in the UK," Fielding Hope, senior producer at London's Cafe OTO, says. "The Department Of Culture's decision here acknowledges the persistent hard work by Fuse Art Space and will be a massive benefit to the people, artists and community of Bradford."
Fuse Art Space was founded in 2014 by Sarah Faraday and James Birchall. As well housing exhibitions, film screenings and workshops, it's hosted performances by electronic artists such as Awesome Tapes From Africa, Space Dimension Controller and this week's RA Podcast subject, Beatrice Dillon.
