  • Tonight marks the launch of the newest night at Melbourne establishment Honkytonks, Pick up the Pieces with resident DJ Nick Thayer. Happening every Wednesday, Pick Up the Pieces will not have a strict music policy, other than playing 'good' music. Nick and guests will play rewarding records for those who like the finer things. For the launch party on Wednesday 1 June, Nick is joined by world renowned turntablist i.Emerge (USA), and in a few weeks Ali B (UK). Nick Thayer's background is coloured by a past as a rock musician, but he gave that away when he decided turntables were easier to deal with than drummers. After playing overseas and then returning to Melbourne where he made his mark as a resident at Out of Order, Nick then started producing music. He is now signed to Sydney label Breaking Point. His debut release 'Theme One' sold out and was included on a MOS compilation. The follow-ups 'Fuckin the Groove' and 'Ante Up' are doing just as well, things aren't slowing down. His next release 'Clap Ya Hands' already appears on the official Mercedes Australian Fashion week CD. To learn more about Nick read our interview below. Nick's guest this week, i.Emerge hails from northern New Jersey and cut his teeth on the New York hip hop scene. In the last three years, Merge has won 9 national titles and 4 world titles, which is more championship titles in 3 years than any other DJ has accumulated in a lifetime. He has won every prominent National title in the US as well as world championship titles in every world dj competition organization in existence. Prior to this moment, the only thing separating Merge from total and utter supremacy was the DMC World title. In only his 2nd year of participation in the competition, Merge brought the DMC title back to New York after its longest hiatus away from America ever (four years). In winning, he became the sixth American to wear the DMC World championship crown, which has also been worn by greats such as Roc Raida, Mix Master Mike, Cash Money, Q-Bert, Craze. Merge is also part of the Scratch DJ Academy in NY, (Founded by the Late Great Jam Master Jay), where his talent for teaching, combined with his level of skill, has propelled him to the position of Head Professor at the Academy. He is the peak turntablist in the US at the moment and works hard to stay that way. Check him! Entry to Honkys is free on Wednesdays and Nick Thayer and i.Emerger are supported by Kim Dezen and Agent 86.
