Speaker Music to debut on Planet Mu with new LP, of desire, longing

- Theorist, journalist, curator and visual artist DeForrest Brown, Jr., AKA Speaker Music, will make his debut on Planet Mu with a new full-length composition. of desire, longing is a "time-based release" and meant to fill both sides of vinyl in order to "work against the quick turnover rate of the track-based streaming economy," according to the label. The record takes influence from electronic and jazz musicians like Les McCann, Urban Tribe and James Stinson. Speaker Music, Brown, Jr.'s music project, was inspired by Rhythmanalysis, a collection of essays by philosopher Henri Lefebvre, in addition to "considerations of vibe, momentum and the 'chronopolitical' in Black music," as described by cultural theorist Kodwo Eshun. As DeForrest Brown Jr., he's released on Quantum Natives, Foraging (with The Actual School) and PTP (with Kepla). Brown, Jr. will present an event, called drape over another, at Artists Space in New York on December 13th, which will celebrate the release of the LP and a related book written with his partner and frequent collaborator, Ting Ding. He's also speaking at Kraków's Unsound Festival today at 2:30 PM local time, discussing Black representation across the music industry and "covering a general history of Black music (with a focus on techno) as it relates to the general development of on-the-ground music cultures."
