A Winged Victory For The Sullen will make their Ninja Tune debut with the new album, The Undivided Five.
Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie's fifth release is inspired by the artist Hilma af Klint, who belonged to a group oriented around the occult called The Five, and the musical concept of the perfect fifth interval. The duo were also influenced by their late friend and collaborator Jóhann Jóhannsson. While creating a remix for the composer before Jóhannsson's death, they discovered a new creative workflow involving modular synthesis and string and piano arrangements, which they use on "Our Lord Debussy." The album was recorded across six different locations, including Brussels' Eglise Du Beguinage, Ben Frost's Reykjavik studio and a remote woodland studio in northern Italy.
The Undivided Five follows A Winged Victory For The Sullen's 2011 debut album, their 2014 EP on Kranky and scores for the likes of Royal Ballet choreographer Wayne McGregor and director Jalil Lespert. Among other things, O'Halloran composed the score for the 2006 film Marie Antoinette and Wiltzie is a founding member of Stars Of The Lid. The pair will tour Europe in support of the album, beginning in February.
