  • Moodymann has collaborated with New Era on a line of hats and attire. The line includes a wool "adventurer" hat, a bucket hat, and a classic 9FIFTY baseball-style hat, as well as a varsity jacket and a long-sleeve T-shirt. Each piece includes the Detroit Tigers-style "old English" D as well as the KDJ Records logo. "I first met the New Era team at Dimensions festival back in 2015 and we started casually talking about custom bucket hats," said Kenny Dixon Jr. "We stayed in touch and a couple of years later I flew to their London office to design this collection. Using the Detroit Trademark English 'D' was the most important element to me. I always want to support my city. I keep Detroit dust under my feet no matter where I'm standing." To mark the occasion, New Era has released a short documentary featuring a rare, candid interview with Dixon Jr. conducted by Gilles Peterson, as well as interviews with Mike Banks and Amp Fiddler. The clip traces Dixon Jr.'s musical history from DJing at his grandfather's bar at nine to working at Buy-Rite Music to starting his labels.
We recently spoke to Dixon Jr. and other members of the team behind the Soul Skate party about black roller skate cultures and how music for the skate rink impacted the club. Read Soul On Wheels here. Check out photos of the Moodymann x New Era line.
