Nyege Nyege reveal next two releases, an electro acholi compilation and Rey Sapienz EP

- They'll arrive via the Ugandan collective's two labels, Nyege Nyege Tapes and Hakuna Kulala.
- Nyege Nyege have announced the next two releases on their two labels, Nyege Nyege Tapes and Hakuna Kulala. First up is an EP from Kampala-based producer Rey Sapienz. On Mushoro's six tracks, Sapienz dives deeper into his takes on soukous and kalindula, according to the press release. Hakuna Kulala will release 120 limited edition cassettes on August 22nd. Next will be the 15-track compilation Electro Acholi Kaboom From Northern Uganda. It explores the origins of the electronic take on traditional acholi courtship music, mostly focusing on the cities of Gulu and Lira in the early 2000s, when the region was experiencing civil war. (The image at the right was taken at a Gulu club in 2002.) The style evolved out of wartime conditions that forced couples to seek out options less expensive than larakaraka wedding bands. The double-LP will be released on September 12th via Nyege Nyege Tapes. The next edition of Nyege Nyege's festival will take place in September. Sapienz is featured on the lineup for a label showcase alongside Slikback, Jay Mitta, Duke & MCZO and more, with Josey Rebelle, Slikback, Shyboi and DJ Scotch Egg set to play the festival, among others.
