  • Emptyset is back on Thrill Jockey for their fifth album, Blossoms, due out in October. For their latest LP, James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas used machine learning to process "their existing material as well as ten hours of improvised recordings using wood, metal and drum skins," according to the press release. "This collection of electronic and acoustic sounds formed unexpected outcomes as the system sought out coherence from within this vastly diverse source material," it continues. The results served as the foundations for Blossoms, in combination with reverbs the duo had previously derived from architectural sites. (Emptyset bounced their sounds off an abandoned Victorian mansion on 2012's Medium.) Blossoms follows a 2017 full-length for Thrill Jockey, Borders, as well as an acoustic EP from the same year, Skin. Listen to "Petal."
