  • Nyege Nyege Festival has announced the lineup for its fifth edition. Running from September 5th through 8th at Nile Discovery Beach in Jinja, Uganda, the Kampala-based party crew has invited over 300 performers from more than 30 countries. This year's edition includes more acts from Asia and the African diaspora, while still maintaining a stacked lineup of artists from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and other African countries. Scheduled to play are eight-piece Congolese band Fulu Mziki, Ethiopian EDM artist Rophnan, Nigerian rapper Santi, Malian artist DJ Diaki and more. The festival will also see many performers from overseas, including China's Kilo Vee and Hyph11E, New York's Shyboi and Suzi Analogue, Japan's DJ Scotch Egg, the UK's Josey Rebelle, Swiss-Congolese artist Bonaventure and Dutch Nyege Nyege resident DJ Marcelle. More Nyege Nyege label artists, such as Slikback, Duke & MCZO, Sisso, Jay Mitta and more, will also play. Last year, Nyege Nyege Festival was nearly shut down when Uganda's minister for ethics and integrity claimed the event would "compromise national integrity" and put citizens "at risk of deviant sexual immorality." Read Aaron Coultate's in-depth feature on Nyege Nyege from 2017. He also recently visited Dar Es Salaam to speak to Nyege Nyege artists Duke and MCZO about singeli.
