  • Gavin Lynch, AKA Matador, is kicking off a new series of vinyl-only EPs called Cyclone. The first EP, Cyclone Series 1, is out on August 1st on white label 12-inch. A press release for Cyclone Series 1 describes the dance floor-oriented music as "fast and furious, power-packed and compelling" and says everything about it is meticulously designed, down to the shape of the waveforms. The series was informed by the early years of Lynch's career, as well as the stripped-back setup he used to make music while touring. "I went on tour and had a week off in Australia," Lynch told Resident Advisor, "I got an apartment and got some speakers from some friends. I was playing a festival and I wanted new music, and it just came together and flowed. I did five tracks that week. It's about limiting what I have—a 303, a 909, my computer and other bits and pieces. I want to be able to recreate it in my new live show this year." Lynch is also starting another new series called 95 BPM: Music To Fill The Space. The concept came out of a dinner party that Lynch, a trained chef, hosted in Los Angeles, where he played three hours of bespoke downtempo and ambient to soundtrack the event. "The music was secondary to the food, at first," Lynch said. "I was designing the menu, then I started writing something for an hour or two hours, writing it my house in Dublin, ten or 15 metres from the shoreline. I primarily write my techno on the other side of the house—a small dark room—and this room has a big glass wall that looks right out onto the sea. And I was inspired by Richie Hawtin's style of working, letting the computer run, playing chords over some bits, adding field recordings and seeing what happens." "The dinner event was a case of bringing people together in LA," he added. "I'm touring more in the US, and I want to bring together people who might understand what I was trying to do. We'll do it again in different places. It's a good way to push me to write different music." 95 BPM will be released to streaming services sometime soon; exact details are forthcoming.
