- Situated next to Piccadilly Station, Depot (FKA Mayfield Depot) will launch in August for Manchester Pride Live.
Broadwick Venues, the team behind Printworks, plans to open a 10,000-capacity cultural space in Manchester called Depot.
The project is a collaboration between local body The Mayfield Partnership and venue specialists Broadwick Venues and Vibration Group. Depot will launch during the August bank holiday for Manchester Pride Live. Subject to planning permission, it'll remain open for a further five years, forming part of the £1 billion-plus regeneration of the surrounding 30-acre Mayfield site.
"We want to add something to the Mancunian cultural landscape which is unique, not just in the city but in the UK," Richard Upton, chief development officer at property developer U+I, said. "Depot will be a place that blends the global with the local and where international stars and local school children will be able access the same quality of performance and studio space. It will be democratic and distinctive."
Depot will be split into three main areas: Depot, the largest of the three; Concourse, which will host food fairs and free community events; and Archive, a smaller performance space that can be used for rehearsals and studio sessions.
Depot may already be familiar to some local ravers. Last year, the space, then called Mayfield Depot, hosted a handful of collaborative events with The Warehouse Project and Manchester International Festival. In 2019, MIF will return to the venue for a purpose-built show called Invisible Cities.
