- Memória das Águas and Barracas Barrocas were recorded during Falcão's exile to France.
Brazilian Optimo Music sub-label Selva Discos will reissue two albums by Fernando Falcão this August.
Falcão was active as a musician and poet in São Paulo during the protest movements of 1968, and eventually landed on the radar of the military regime after planting a bomb against the military dictatorship. Following this incident, his older brother sent him to France under fear that he'd be arrested and jailed for life.
He spent 15 years in France, honing his skills as a musician, actor and sculptor and becoming involved with Jérôme Savary's Grand Magic Circus, where he met his wife, Valérie Kling. He went on to work with his father-in-law, François-Xavier Lalanne, to invent "sound sculptures," including "a one-of-a-kind balauê—a horizontal version of the berimbau string instrument," the label says.
This period of experimentation led to the recording of his debut album, Memória das Águas. It "captures the spirit and rhythm of Falcão’s homeland combined with the lush production and art pop approach associated with his exiled home," Selva Discos says. "[It's a] fusion of African, Brazilian, jazz, pop, classical and avant-garde."
"Of all the Brazilian albums I have, Memória das Águas is without a doubt one of my favourites," says Outro Tempo curator John Gomez. "I have never managed to understand why Memória das Águas has not received the recognition of legendary Brazilian albums like those of Arthur Verocai and Pedro Santos."
Selva Discos, run by Selvagem's Augusto Olivani (who is also behind the upcoming Brazilian street soul compilation), will also reissue Falcão's 1987 LP, Barracas Barrocas.
