  • Nyege Nyege Tapes and its sub-label Hakuna Kulala have an EP and an album on the way. The first one will land on Nyege's Hakuna Kulala subsidiary, an outlet for contemporary club music from East Africa and surrounding areas. Slikback returns to Hakuna Kulala with Tomo, after inaugurating the label with last year's Lasakaneku. The six-track record continues in his style "borrowing from footwork, trap, grime and a variety of contemporary underground African club styles," says the press release. The other record, on the Ugandan label's main platform, is the debut album from singeli producer DUKE. The press release describes Uingizaji Hewa as "perhaps the most punkish of all with a complete DIY aggressive style, stretching the BPM into the stratosphere... [and] borrowing from everything from popular Tanzanian advertising jingles to ambient sounds from around his studio." These releases follow in the footsteps of singeli producer Jay Mitta's first album, which came out on Nyege Nyege Tapes earlier this month. A handful of Nyege-affiliated artists, including Slikback, DUKE, Otim Alpha and more, will head on our their largest tours yet, including Europe and Asia, this spring. Listen to Slikback's "Kyokai."
