  • James Holden's next album is a score for a film called A Cambodian Spring. The documentary, directed by Christopher Kelly, tells the story of modern political life in Cambodia, including protests that sparked the Cambodian Spring and its aftermath. Holden provided the music—his first time scoring a film—and it's a solo affair, in contrast to recent collaborative records like 2017's The Animal Spirits album. Kelly originally wanted to use "Self-Playing Schmaltz," from Holden's 2013 album The Inheritors, eventually inviting Holden to score the entire film. Holden makes heavy use of the Prophet 600 synthesizer—which he also used on The Inheritors—along with a Hammond organ that died during the production of the score. The press release says that as a standalone soundtrack, A Cambodian Spring has "has much to offer, with cleansing, contemplative drone and euphoric melodies alike." It'll come via Holden's Border Community label. Listen to "Solidarity Theme (Release)."
