- A final run of 29 parties will be held to celebrate the club's 29-year history.
Melbourne club Lounge will shut its doors for good in April.
The Swanston Street venue will not have its lease renewed in 2019 due to development plans, ending a 29-year run for one of the city's longest-serving nightclubs. Since opening its doors in 1989, Lounge has hosted acts like Gil Scott-Heron and Jeff Buckley, serving as a premiere spot for intimate live music performances. It's also been a haven for club music in Melbourne, with recent years seeing names such as Jane Fitz, DJ Bone, The Black Madonna, Peter Van Hoesen and Rick Wilhite stepping into the booth.
To commemorate Lounge's three decades, a series called 29 Parties For 29 Years will begin in February, running up until the venue's final night in mid-April. Local promoters—and nights past and present—slated to host these parties include Butter Sessions, Citipower, Bunker, Common Ground, Pleasure Planet, overpast, Technoir and Voyage Recordings, with more to be added and a number of surprise performances happening along the way.
A statement from the club says, "As Lounge has brought so much joy to so many people over such a long period of time, we aim for this period to be a series of celebrations, rather than a funeral."
