- New single "Shot Gun Shack" accompanies today's announcement for the LP, out in October.
Neneh Cherry has revealed full details of her next album, Broken Politics.
Scheduled for release in October through Smalltown Supersound, Broken Politics is Cherry's fifth solo LP and the first since 2014's Blank Project. Once again, the Swedish-born singer teamed up with Kieran Hebden, AKA Four Tet, who produced the entire record. It features artwork from award-winning photographer Wolfgang Tillmans.
"[Blank Project] was much angrier and forceful, whereas this one is quieter and more reflective," Cherry says of Broken Politics, adding that it explores themes of "feeling broken, disappointed and sad, but having perseverance. It's a fight against the extinction of free thought and spirit."
She worked on the album with Hebden and writing partner Cameron McVey at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York. The studio space was co-founded by jazz pianist Karl Berger, who had musical connections to both her father and her stepfather (jazz trumpeter Don Cherry) and was friends with her mother.
We got a first taste of Broken Politics earlier this month with the single "Kong," produced by Hebden and Massive Attack's 3D.
