  • Melbourne promoter Thick As Thieves expect to exceed $500,000 raised for The Fred Hollows Foundation across a seven-year period this weekend. Since 2011 the local touring and events agency has hosted dozens of parties to raise money for the Australian charity, which works to restore eyesight for millions around the world and ultimately aims to end avoidable blindness globally. Entry to the events is generally priced around $25, a figure quoted by the Foundation as the cost of performing cataract surgery to a blind person in a developing country. Thick As Thieves founder Mike Toner explains "I think that people love coming to our events, not only because they have a great time, but because they know they can effectively restore the sight of one person by simply walking through the door. At the beginning, we used to ask the DJs if they'd be happy to donate one evening for free to The Fred Hollows Foundation, but it's been such a success over the years that now, the DJs get in touch to ask if they can do a gig for Fred when they’re in Australia." Currently the total funds donated to The Fred Hollows Foundation by Thick As Thieves sits at $496,000. The next fundraiser event, which is expected to tip that total over the half-million mark, will take place on Sunday, August 12th at Revolver Upstairs with Boogs and Brian Fantana going back-to-back for a five-hour stint. Damon Walsh & Jacob Malmo, Spacey Space and Silversix are among the other names playing the 16-hour event.
