  • The German city of Mannheim has appointed a new night mayor. Hendrik Meier, a 27-year-old student and promoter, was chosen from a group of ten finalists. Tasked with boosting nightlife in the 300,000-person city, Meier was selected by an eight-person jury, beating out DJs, musicians and an economics teacher. His appointment follows similar moves in cities such as Amsterdam, New York and London. "I'll do everything I can to make a cool thing out of it," Meier said of the role, which will see him employed for 50 hours a month while acting as a liaison between bar and club owners, residents and the city council. Located between Frankfurt and Stuttgart, Mannheim is home to a number of popular clubs, including Hafen 49, Loft Club and Parker Lewis, and hosts the annual Time Warp festival, which brings tens of thousands of ravers to the city with each edition. It's also the birthplace of the so-called "Mannheim sound," a loopy style of house music once associated with acts like Nick Curly, Johnny D and Reboot.
