  • A new album from the Firecracker Recordings project Mac-Talla Nan Creag, called The Sorrow Of Derdriu, will see release in late August. Mac-Talla Nan Creag is an experimental group comprising Lord Of The Isles, Hoch Ma Toch (AKA Wounded Knee) and Other Lands that uses field recordings, traditional instruments, analog electronic gear and the human voice. The project first appeared on Firecracker three years ago with a self-titled album that grew out of a trip funded by the Scottish Forestry Commission which the artists took with label boss Lindsay Todd (House Of Traps) to explore Iron Age structures in the country's highlands. The Sorrow Of Derdriu has similar roots, with the group drawing inspiration from the Dun Deardail fort in Glen Nevis and its links to an ancient myth about the tragic heroine Derdriu. While the first album featured a looser, more "whisky-fueled" approach, this one is said to be "perhaps more focused in its themes relating to the ancient tale—love, war, beauty and tragedy all intertwined." It includes contributions from Professor John Kenny and Other Lands' daughter Eva Sutherland, and the vinyl and CD editions, featuring the label's usual deluxe treatment (with silk-screened artwork), will come with a booklet highlighting the Forestry Commission's work at Dun Deardail.
