  • A host of techno and house artists were given Spirit Of Detroit awards this week, including DJ Minx and Stacey Hale. The award from Detroit city council recognizes "exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership and dedication to improving the quality of life." This week, a number of women with extensive histories in techno and house received the award: Minx, Hale, Traci from Moodymann's Mahogani Music label, Detroit Techno Militia cofounder Angie Linder, Underground Resistance member Bridgette Banks and Joy Santiago, a real estate broker who founded the Moshi Company (a Detroit DJ agency that started in 1990). Laura Gavoor, who managed Derrick May's Transmat label in the '90s and worked with other core Detroit techno artists, was also given the award posthumously. The Spirit Of Detroit awards came just in time for Movement Festival in Detroit this weekend. Last year, Kyle Hall and Jay Daniel were given the award, while K-Hand was recognized as the "First Lady Of Detroit." Past Spirit Of Detroit recipients include Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, among many others. Listen back to DJ Minx's RA Podcast from last year.
Minx shared photos of the award in a Facebook post.
