  • 93 Feet East is filling out its spring lineup with new parties added in April and May. The programme takes advantage of the Brick Lane club's outdoor courtyard with a round of daytime parties. This Saturday, April 14th, Youandewan and The Ghost lead a daylong OSCURO gig. Next Bank Holiday weekend on May 6th, Birmingham label One Records's day party will take over, with Thomas Melchior, Subb-an, Adam Shelton and Jack Wickham tapped to perform. Fresh off its relaunch earlier this year, the Brick Lane venue is fine-tuning its booking strategy, aiming for a balance of promoting local talent and established names. 93 Feet East's Tony Cannatella spoke to Resident Advisor about the space's refreshed ethos, updated decor and soundsystem. Tell us about the direction you've taken the club in since reopening. Within a short amount of time we've tried to find the right balance of respected UK and international acts which you'd usually find in London's bigger, more established clubs and venues, alongside up and coming local talent and promoters. We are programming these great artists in a far more intimate space, giving people and the DJs more of a personal one-to-one experience and atmosphere. We're trying to show how special the venue is, which wasn't always obvious to people before. Electronic music has been pushed to the outskirts of London. We've been able to relaunch a centrally located venue with a great history and we want to people to feel like they still have the option to stay local, rather than pushing people to travel far and wide to hear their favourite DJs. I feel it's important that we try and create a space where artists feel like they're part of the crowd and everyone feels like they're in it together. What changes have you made to the soundsystem and general setup? The sound system in The Bar is the same d&b audiotechnik, it was brought in by the venue under the guidance of FUSE resident, Enzo Siragusa, back when the FUSE London parties were doing weekly Sunday events. It didn't need replacing, just some reconfiguration and tuning to suit the positional change of the DJ booth. We moved the DJ booth from its previous position high-up in the corner of the room, and made it lower and more central, which gives the DJs that a closer connection with the crowd. Supported by our bespoke soundsystem, it makes everyone feel like they're in the party together. We did change the soundsystem in The Hall to a new d&b audiotechnik system, as the system in The Bar works so well for us. We also gave the whole venue a facelift, mainly by stripping back the walls and floors to their original state and adding some new features and subtle touches which complement the more industrial feel of the space.
