  • The Red Cross used last weekend's Mysteryland festival in Haarlemmermeer, Netherlands, to test new methods of disaster response. Across Saturday, August 26th and Sunday, August 27th, the Red Cross, in collaboration with the Open-House events innovation platform, tested humanitarian aid technology for three areas: energy, sanitation and lighting. The project, which began in 2016 and concluded this year, tested new forms of cheap power, such as solar panels and windmills. These technologies replaced a diesel generator, an unsustainable power source often found at festivals and refugee camps. "We found out that the needs are changing in refugee camps and disasters," Merlin Stoffels, spokesman for the Red Cross, told NOS. "Electricity is becoming increasingly important. [After a typhoon in the Philippines] I expected people to ask me for food and drink, but what they wanted was to charge their phone and wifi. The first thing you want to do is let family know you're alive." Founded in 1993, Mysterland is among the world's longest running festivals. With around 60,000 attendees each year, it's also among the largest. This year saw sets from Eats Everything, Sven Väth and Butch among EDM and trance acts such as Deadmau5 and Armin van Buuren.
