- Roman Filippov is bringing back the sound of Blade Runner.
Roman Filippov of Sputnik Modular is working on a clone of the Yamaha CS-80, the synth made popular by Vangelis's Blade Runner soundtrack.
The original machine, which was first produced in 1977, is among the most coveted of vintage analogue synthesisers, often selling for upwards of €10,000. According to Matrixsynth, the first complete clone version is being sent to composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who is currently scoring the hotly anticipated sequel to Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049. The clone is fittingly called Deckard's Dream, which is a reference to a dream sequence in the director's cut edition of Blade Runner where the possibility of Harrison Ford's character being a replicant is raised. It's an eight-voice analogue build that will be available in both DIY and pre-built forms. Unlike the original CS-80, Deckard's Dream is a rackmount design and will be complimented by various expander modules in the future, which will allow CV control over parameters and includes effects like spring reverb, ring modulation, delay and chorus.
Filippov has a reputation for creating accurate clones of vintage hardware, most notably with his take on the Buchla Music Easel. He also runs Sputnik Modular, a respected manufacturer of Eurorack modules. There is currently no word on the price or release date of Deckard's Dream.
