  • Raster-Noton is releasing a book and compilation. source book 1 is being released on the 20th anniversary of the German experimental label's launch. (Raster-noton proper didn't release music until 1999, but its two parent labels, Rastermusic and noton.archiv für ton und nichtton, were founded in 1996.) The book is prefaced by one of the label's founders, Olaf Bender AKA Byetone, before Max Dax, a writer formerly of Electronic Beats and Spex, finds out about the philosophy behind the label from Bender and the other founders, Frank Bretschneider and Carsten Nicolai. A catalog of the label's releases, products and projects follows. It's accompanied by archiv 4, a compilation CD found exclusively with source book 1 featuring tracks from label members like Kyoka, Kangding Ray, Emptyset, Ueno Masaaki, Atom™, Grischa Lichtenberger, Anne-James Chaton, Senking, Robert Lippok and the label founders. source book 1 is the first in a series of publications. Future instalments will feature "artist profiles, installations, composition techniques and sources of inspiration." Available in an edition of 1000, the book has what Raster-Notons call a "modular design" from which pages can be removed or exchanged for others, meaning the book can be manually updated.
