  • There will be a candlelight vigil honoring dance music legend David Mancuso at Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan this Saturday at 5PM. Mancuso began throwing rent parties at his Greenwich Village apartment in the mid-60s, and in 1970 it officially opened as The Loft. Though it moved around over the years, The Loft has run as a regular party for over 35 years, and it influenced legendary DJs like Larry Levan, Nicky Siano and Frankie Knuckles. Mancuso was also known for running the New York Record Pool, which distributed records to his DJ cohorts and hugely influenced the sound of the city's club scene. A month after Mancuso's passing, a group of Loft regulars have organized a candelight vigil to celebrate his legacy in Tompkins Square Park this Saturday. The ceremony begins at 5 PM. For those interested in learning more about his contribution to the foundation of dance music culture, check out an excerpt from Tim Lawrence's book Life And Death On The New York Dance Floor, 1980-83 that RA published in October.
