A two-volume set of New York disco edits, The Men In The Glass Booth, is out on BBE in January.
The Al Kent-curated compilations look back to a specific period in the mid-70s when dance floors developed a taste for the extended mix. The label explains that one of the edits on The Men In The Glass Booth, Walter Gibbons' mix of Double Exposure's "Ten Percent," was instrumental in this transition. That record, an early release on Salsoul Records, infused the Philly soul sound with a "percussive, bass-heavy depth that New York's DJs loved," according to the press release.
"Salsoul became the first record label to make a 12-inch single available to Joe Public," BBE says, while also thrusting Gibbons into a recording studio, "gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before." The 30 edits, including classics from the likes of John Morales, Tee Scott, Jellybean Benitez and Francois K, are spread across two five-LP sets and come with a 40-page book.
