  • Dope Jams will release a new compilation, Dope Jams NYC Volume 1: 2005-2012, on November 25th. The original vinyl shop opened in 2005 on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood. For seven years it also played host to a series of much-loved dance parties, where founders Paul Nickerson and Francis Englehardt (AKA Slow To Speak) were often at the controls. It closed in 2012 due to rent hikes, and then reopened in Upstate New York the following year. Now Nickerson and Englehardt have announced a three-disc retrospective compilation to celebrate their early years at the Myrtle Avenue location. It also contains a few different booklets with a slew of photos, essays and letters from friends. The tracklist is heavy on the soulful house tracks the duo is known for, and it mixes reissued material with previously unreleased tracks. "It is an archive of the shop in Brooklyn, both musically and visually," Nickerson told RA. "Even more important than the music were the friends we made through the shop, so it was important to focus on them as much as the music." 2AM/FM, Funk D'Void, Hieroglyphic Being and D'Marc Cantu are among the artists featured. There will be a few additional 12-inches that will follow the compilation, and possibly more full-length collections later on down the road. Listen to the album cut "What Cha Gonna Do" by Vil-N-X.
