Music For Downers brings Shifted, Laurel Halo to Chicago

- Chicago's Music For Downers has four events coming up, including two this weekend. The multi-disciplinary artist collective, with roots in the noise scene and tape-trading community, was founded in 2012, and promotes experimental techno, industrial, noise and beyond by hosting events and putting out limited-edition cassette tapes. DJ Stingray, Varg and Silent Servant count among their bookings over the past few months, and as summer winds down, more parties with lineups featuring rare and debut Chicago appearances from out-of-town guests, as well as sets from adventurous local live acts and DJs, are in the works. They'll happen at a few different spaces—Club Rectum, Laura and Like I, Love You (LILU)—and sending an email will get you further details. This Friday has Music For Downers welcoming to town UK artist and Avian label head Shifted, who'll make his Windy City debut with a live set. Shifted is getting ready to open a new Avian offshoot, and he has a new album for Hospital Productions coming in October. Also billed to play live is Litüus, AKA Connor Camburn, a local producer who put out an EP of stripped-down hardware experiments, 19805. -_ 19905,, through Avian last fall. Two Chicago DJs, brandi and Ørder, round out the lineup. A party Saturday night has Dedekind Cut, an alias for the New York artist previously known as Lee Bannon, as headliner. First surfacing last year, Dedekind Cut's dark, unpredictable output includes an album issued jointly by Ninja Tune and Hospital Productions in March. The local side of this Saturday's program includes Michael DeMaio, who'll soon release a tape through the Music For Downers label. Looking further ahead, leftfield producer Inga Copeland, formerly of Hype Williams, tops the bill at a show on Friday, September 16th, as part of her first solo US tour, and Laurel Halo and Confused House man Steve Summers are booked for a gathering the night of Saturday, October 8th.
