  • Toronto bar and music venue Cabal will shut its doors at the end of this month. The casual cocktail lounge and restaurant has become a hub for Toronto's dance music scene in recent years, hosting the likes of Lawrence, Fred P and Soichi Terada and keeping a pool of local talent close. In a statement released today, owner Borzoo Mehrzad revealed that Cabal's lease was coming to an end after August, and that they could not afford to renew it in because "gentrification has caught up with [Cabal]." ("Not to mention all the backward city and liquor laws and regulations that has made Toronto one of the least desirable cities to be in the nightlife business," he adds.) As for future plans, Mehrzad says he's not sure if he'll open another club, but definitely not in "the near future." Mehrzad himself will play an open-to-close set this Friday, August 5th. The final three closing events will go down from August 18th through 20th, but details of those are still under wraps. You can read the full statement here.
