- The film chronicles the making of James Hinton's recent album, Potential.
The making of The Range's Potential LP is chronicled in a new documentary, Superimpose, with a soundtrack crafted by the Brooklyn-based producer himself.
Potential, James Hinton's second full-length as The Range, was released in March on indie institution Domino. The album was built with vocal samples pulled from amateur YouTube videos, and Superimpose focuses on the people behind those voices. Directed by Daniel Kaufman, the documentary looked to New York, and also traveled to Kingston, Jamaica and London, in order to highlight those stories.
The film is soundtracked by Hinton himself, who used material from Potential and new music for the occasion, leading to a seven-track EP, Superimpose (Music From The Documentary). Both the film and the EP will get a digital release next week, on Thursday, August 4th.
An early version of Superimpose was shown at two festivals, SXSW in Austin (in March) and Pitchfork in Chicago (just last weekend). Screenings of the full version have been confirmed for early August in Los Angeles, New York and London.
Hinton, meanwhile, will continue with his international gigging, and in the fall he'll play live as support for indie pop duo Phantogram's US tour.
