  • Sammy String, a resident DJ at Freerotation festival in Wales, died on May 24th following a two-year battle with cancer. In addition to being a resident DJ at Freerotation, Sam Newton was a stage manager at the festival. "Sammy was the embodiment of the party spirit," says Freerotation's co-founder, Suzybee. "He was happiest when he was on the decks, and dancing and laughing with friends—and his heart was open to everyone. He had a deep connection to the wild magic of the eternal moment, a free soul who resonated with wild and wonderful characters from all walks of life. He was at the heart of Freerotation from the start and helped to make it into a warm and happy experience for so many. His warmth, generosity, laughter, swing, groove and magical nature will live on in us all—especially in those eternal, collectively-connected party moments." Fellow Freerotation founder Steevio adds: "I've been Sammy String's friend since he was a teenager, when we were both on the traveller/free festival circuit in the early 1990s. He was always up for a party, one of those effervescent characters that always brought a smile to your face, and was always deeply immersed in the music he loved. Seeped in the underground free-party music of the time, such as the DIY and Smokescreen Sound Systems, he quickly developed into a talented house DJ. He was a lovely, sweet guy, and as one of the real characters and pivotal crew members of Freerotation, he will be sorely missed. He left early for the afterparty, but we'll see him there later. RIP Sammy String."
